Many Wilmington residents don’t realize where Market Street got its name.

A former Market House once stood in the middle of Market Street between Front and Water Street.  A focal point of downtown, the Market House was an important trading center for the city. The market was situated in a prominent spot befitting its importance to the community.  The market was demolished in 1881 and its function moved to the City Market on Front Street.  A median and a few parking spaces now occupy the spot.

This proposal’s concept is not a literal recreation of the former structure, but a re-creation of a former idea.
